Local Business Spotlight: Why Parkrose Hardware is My Go-To Portland Staple

From canning supplies to an impressive houseplant section, here’s why keeping hardware dollars local beats Bezos ordering every time.

When you work in real estate across the Portland metro area, you spend a lot of time in hardware stores. Whether it’s picking up supplies for a quick weekend fix, winterizing outdoor faucets, or prepping a home for market, having a reliable local hardware store is an absolute necessity.

While the giant big-box stores and online carts are easy habits to fall into, my absolute favorite local spot is Parkrose Hardware. They also have a phenomenal Rental department for everything from concrete mixers to cotton candy machines!

If you haven't spent time wandering the aisles of their flagship store on NE Sandy Boulevard, you’re missing out on one of East Portland's best community institutions. Here are a few reasons why it holds a permanent spot on my local business favorites list:

1. The Canning Supplies Aisle Is Unmatched

Whether you're preserving summer tomatoes, making homemade marinara, or pickling garden veggies, their canning section is top-tier. Finding jars, lids, water bath canners, and specialty supplies in one organized spot—without having to guess if they'll arrive broken in a cardboard box—is a breath of fresh air.

2. The Houseplant & Garden Section

Most hardware store plant sections feel like an afterthought under harsh fluorescent lights. Parkrose Hardware’s garden center, however, feels like a full-fledged local nursery. Their houseplant selection is surprisingly robust, healthy, and stocked with greenery that actually thrives once you bring it home. It’s nearly impossible to leave without adding a new plant baby to the windowsill.

3. Actual Helpful Expertise

Walking into Parkrose Hardware means interacting with folks who actually know home maintenance. If you’re stumped on a weird plumbing fit, matching a vintage screw, or finding the right wall anchor, there’s always someone nearby ready to help you solve the problem instead of pointing vaguely toward "Aisle 14."

4. Keeping Your Money Local

At the end of the day, shopping here means keeping your hard-earned dollars right here in our Pacific Northwest community—not just gifting more money to one of the richest men to ever live. Supporting long-standing local businesses preserves the character, vitality, and economic resilience of our region.
